Athletics Ireland National Children’s Games

Tullamore Harriers Stadium – 3rd July 2016

Four of Longford Athletic Club’s youngest members qualified to compete in the GloHealth Athletics Ireland National Children’s Games last Sunday in Tullamore. Twin brothers Cormac and Padraic Mulligan from Dromard finished in 7th place overall out of 13 pairs in the U9 Boys Turbo Javelin event with their combined score of 23.74m. The boys enthusiastically practiced at home and improved their bronze medal distance from Connacht by 5 meters. Cormac’s best throw of 12.52m listed him as 9th on the panel of 26.
Rising to competition at National level never phased the U9 Boys Relay Team who thoroughly enjoyed their day out in Tullamore. Max Gallagher, Conor Wright, Cormac and Padraic Mulligan gave a very smooth performance in their heat, 1:08.26, with all baton handovers completed well. They were disappointed to narrowly miss the recall to the final by a fraction of a second.
The U14-16 Combined Events Programme was integrated into the day’s events in Tullamore. Longford’s only entrant was Brendan Finnan in the U14 Boys pentathlon, doing 5 events over the day. Brendan succeeded in improving both his 800m time by 5 seconds, and overall score from his first outing in the Indoor season in January. Well done on his 7th place finish out of 11 participants in this age group.
Next weekend 3 teams will travel to the National Relay Finals for juveniles aged U12-19. Day 1 of the individual National Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday July 10th will see Longford’s middle distance Connacht medallists take to the track. Jack Gallagher U13 600m, and Joe Reilly, Christopher Conaty and Cian McPhillips will all run in the 800m events.
