The 10th annual Co. Longford Primary School Relays took place on Friday at a new venue for the event in St. Mel’s College. It was a super evening of racing despite the damp conditions. Twelve relay races of 4 x 200m were held as well as ten 200m races for children not on a relay team.

17 national schools were represented with children from 2nd – 6th classes:
Ardagh, Ballinalee, Ballymahon, Bunlahy, Colmcille, Dromard, Drumlish, Edgeworthstown, Glen, Killasonna, Killeen, Killoe, Melview, Mullinalaghta, Newtownforbes, Tashinny and St. Joseph’s Longford.

Well done to the girls and boys who ran and provided a great evening’s athletics and thanks to the schools and parents for organising entries. Medal winners listed below.

Many thanks to the club coaches, committee, parents and juvenile club members for helping with the staging of an event that had over 500 participants. Our thanks to St. Mel’s College for the use of their grounds and to the Civil Defence for their assistance on the evening.
Congratulations to Scoil Mhuire, Newtownforbes on retaining the Ray Flynn Trophy for the best performing school in the relays. Melview placed as runners-up just ahead of St. Mary’s Drumlish in third.

The girls and boys of Newtownforbes were to the fore winning four relay races and achieving a podium place in a further four. A special mention to their fifth-class girls who all accompanied classmate Shauna Mahon across the finish line in a great show of friendship and togetherness.
