Super Sunday for John Fitzpatrick at National Indoors
John Fitzpatrick had an All-Irelands to remember when winning gold and silver medals at the National Indoors on Sunday. A brilliant display of jumping in the Under-13 High Jump saw him earn gold with a leading clearance of 1.56m. This personal best leap was over 10 centimetres better than the next placed athlete.
A short time later, Melview schoolboy John followed it up with a tremendous silver medal success in the 2kg Shot Put. A longest effort of 10.82m, setting a personal best for the event, secured second place on the podium for talented John who had also competed well in the Long Jump on Saturday. Congratulations John!
There were plenty of other excellent performances, with personal bests, by club members on Sunday. Leah Waters achieved a best height of 1.35m for seventh in the U13 High Jump and later ran well in the 60m Hurdles.
Sinéad Masterson was back in action and placed seventh in the U14 Long Jump.
Seán Grealy and Holly Rogers clocked fast times in the 200m.
Saturday’s 1500m bronze medalist Emma Brennan was back on the track and ran strongly in the 800m to qualify from her heat before placing sixth in the final.
At a National Championship of high quality, there was valuable experience gained for our athletes all of whom having already done so well to have qualified from February’s Connacht Championships.
This weekend concluded a very successful indoor season for the club that began in November and one in which many members tried out new events and greatly benefited from the addition of our Indoor Centre.
Well done to all – it was great to see so many talented young members participating in competition over the months. Thanks to our club coaches, particularly John and Paul, for their excellent work with the athletes in preparation for the different events.
With the outdoor track season fast approaching, we look forward to building upon the great progress made once training resumes later this month.
