Scottish Success for Emma
Emma Brennan put in another excellent performance last Sunday to take victory in the Under-17 1500m Steeplechase at the Scottish Championships in Grangemouth. In a close race, she showed her strength to move clear of the field in the final stages to claim top spot on the podium. A notable double for Emma who won the equivalent title at the Irish championships in July. One event remains in what’s been a long, but successful, track season when she lines up in the 1500m at next weekend’s Community Games National finals in Carlow.
World Masters Championships
Fiona Gettings took to the start line at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg last Saturday for the 5000m at the World Masters Championships. It was a high-quality race in the Swedish city featuring top athletes from five continents. Fiona gave it her all over the 12-and-a-half laps running strongly to finish in a superb eighth place. Another tremendous international appearance in the green singlet by Fiona, one of Longford’s most talented ever sportspeople, who continues to excel.
Results Round-up
Patryk Prusak had a strong run at the Wild Atlantic 10 mile in Ballina for an eighth-place finish. Elsewhere on Sunday, there were good performances by Michael O’Hara and Charlie Barone at the Kilcock 10 mile. The Longford Trail Run Series continued on Wednesday evening last at Corlea Bog. Another very good turnout of 181 with a Longford AC one-two finish in juvenile athletes Rian McCaffrey and Dylan Ledwith. The remaining events in the series are at Derrycassin Woods (August 21) and Newcastle Woods (Aug 28).
Best wishes to all taking in one of the distances at the Longford Marathon on Sunday and also to all the young athletes representing the county at the Community Games on Saturday.
